5TH WARD: A CULTURAL ARTS DESTINATION
Fifth Ward has long been a melting pot of artistic talent, culinary greatness, and rich culture. A place for Houstonians to not just see the arts, but become part of it.
It’s time the rest of the world know and we need your help!
Local organizations, businesses, and residents are working to designate Fifth Ward a “Cultural Arts District.”Just so you know how important this is, there are less than fifty in Texas and five in Houston.
This is a monumental moment and we want you to be part of it. Choose at least on way you’ll get involved:
WAYS TO GET INVOLVED
ABOUT
THE MISSION.
Our goal is to formalize what we've known all along; Fifth Ward Houston is a cultural arts destination. One way to accomplish this is by attaining a "Cultural Arts District" designation. Through this website, we want to ensure the Fifth Ward and Greater Houston community is integrally involved in this adventure.
WHAT IS A CULTURAL ARTS DISTRICT?
A Cultural Arts District is a community full of rich cultural and artistic assets that showcase the uniqueness of an area while supporting economic development.
There is also a designation from the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA). You can find more information here.
THE VISION.
Unlike the name suggests, this designation isn’t just about the arts; it’s about harnessing the power of our rich and amazing history in arts and culture to support our economic and community growth. We’re talking about new businesses (hello coffee shop), growing existing businesses, creating jobs, preserving and celebrating the many cultures within Fifth Ward as well as showcasing the amazing creative talent and opportunities Fifth Ward has to offer.
WHAT IS 5TH WARD?
The Lyons Avenue Corridor is a large portion of Fifth Ward bounded on the south by the I-10 Interstate highway, and extensive and heavily used rail yards and rail lines along its northern edge.
The eastern boundary includes land along Lockwood Drive, and was extended to consider the blocks and streets that continue up to the edge of a north/south at-grade rail corridor that is the effective boundary. The western edge of the corridor is extended to include Jensen Drive, just west of Hwy 59.
